Rick Thrall, PE, GE
PhD, Oregon State University
Civil Engineering, 1982
BS, Oregon State University
Civil Engineering, 1976
Rick has nearly 35 years of geotechnical engineering experience, with the past 30+ years experience in the states of Oregon and Washington. Rick is presently a Geotechnical Engineer with Strata Design, Inc. A significant portion of Rick's career has been spent as a geotechnical discipline leader responsible for growing and developing profitable professional groups with AMEC (now AMEC Foster Wheeler), GeoDesign and PBS Engineering and Environmental. Formative years were spent with Golder Associates and Landslide Technology. His assignments have typically included responsibility for overseeing and completing projects; maintaining technical rigor and quality; developing and maintaining professional engineering teams, testing and administrative staff; maintaining good relationships with clients; maintaining billings and schedules; and managing risk to the company based on our activities.
Dr. Thrall has served as project manager on unique combinations of geotechnical and civil engineering projects involving essential facilities. Projects have included major structures and buildings, bridges, dams, landslides, levees, instrumentation, water supply, pumping facilities, and pipelines. He is recognized in his field and can demonstrate professional geotechnical engineering skills. He provides geotechnical expertise common to most geotechnical projects on a day to day basis on a variety of projects and for a variety of clients. These include evaluation and use of materials for fill or select materials, evaluation and mitigation of substandard foundation conditions, slope stability evaluations and mitigation, seismic stability evaluations. He has completed this work
typically for heavy civil type projects for Utilities, Municipalities, Major Developers and State and Federal Clients.
Randy Goode, PE
BS, Oregon State University
Civil Engineering, 1986
Randy has over 20 years in professional engineering consulting practice with primary emphasis in geo/environmental engineering, public works, project management, and construction QA/QC throughout Oregon, Washington and California. He has specialized in client and project pursuits, construction project management and QA/QC on large, multi-faceted public works projects. He has extensive experience with civil and geotechnical analysis, and environmental site design involving contaminated site remediation, stormwater treatment, erosion control plans, with specific attention to foundations and earth structures, micropiles, soil nails, earthwork and shoring, and landslide stabilization projects, incorporating best management practices in producing low impact, sustainable development design solutions.
Randy is skilled in utilizing mapping and design software and engineering analysis programs including AutoCad Civil 3D, Slope/W, LPILE, CONSOL, SNAIL and others. Utilizing ArcGIS and LiDAR survey point clouds and has developed processes in-house for creating 3D elevation site plan and DTM surfaces for migration into autoCAD software. This provides clients with full access to high precision topographic site survey maps from already existing data, while further serving as the most effective tool for interpretations of slopes geomorphology and hazards, along with designing civil grading and earthwork plans.
Ben is uniquely qualified with utility, stormwater, and street improvement designs over a wide variety of residential and commericial developments. Ben is an expert in using Civil 3D and GIS software, including performing cut/fill estimates and designs of roads, stormwater facilities, and water/storm/sanitary utilities. He models stormwater runoff for the creation of infiltration basins and other detention facilities, and interprets codes and design manuals for stormwater, roads, and commercial development. Ben graduated from Portland State University in 2013 with a BS in Environmental Engineering. His studies focused on hydraulics, groundwater hydrology, aquatic chemistry, water treatment, and wastewater treatment.
Ben Berry, PE,
BS, Portland State University
Paul joined Strata in 2018, leading many site investigations, construction observations and testing, and preparing reports of his findings for clients. He has over 15 years of civil and geotechnical engineering experience and is an expert in site investigations. Fun fact, Paul has logged over 16,000 linear feet of soil including 230 hand auger, 1030 test pits, and 190 soil borings. Also proficient in cone penetrometers, pavement cores, retaining walls, piles, and fill placement, he has a well rounded geotechnical background. Paul graduated from University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1999 with a BS in Civil Engineering. Prior to geotechnical engineering, his focus was on designing commercial and residential civil site development projects including storm and sanitary sewer, water, street, and grading plans.
